FAQ (PMU)

What Is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup is a procedure where pigments are implanted into the dermal layer of the skin, giving the illusion of makeup. It can be used to enhance eyebrows, eyeliner, lip colour, hairlines and even camouflage scars or reconstruct areolas.

How long does permanent makeup last?

The longevity of permanent makeup depends on various factors, including individual skin type, the colour used, lifestyle, and proper aftercare. Generally, it tends to last anywhere from 18 months to 2 years before requiring touch-ups.

Does it hurt?

The level of discomfort varies from person to person. Before the procedure, a topical anaesthetic can be applied to minimise any discomfort during the process. Some clients may experience slight discomfort, while others may feel nothing at all.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure duration depends on the area being treated and the complexity of the desired result. Generally, my eyebrow or lips procedures can take around 2 hours for the initial appointment, of which half an hour can be spent on mapping. Colour boost appointments generally take an hour.

Is permanent makeup safe?

When performed by a trained and experienced professional in a clean and sterile environment, permanent makeup is safe. It is crucial to choose a qualified technician who follows proper hygiene protocols and uses high-quality pigments to minimise any risks or complications.

How should I prepare for a procedure?

To prepare for a permanent makeup session, it is advisable to avoid alcohol, caffeine, aspirin, and any blood-thinning medications for at least 24 hours before the appointment. Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and chemical peels in the treated area for a couple of weeks before the procedure. Please read your confirmation emails before your appointment for full disclosure.

What is the recovery process like?

The recovery process for permanent makeup varies depending on the individual. There may be some swelling, redness, and tenderness immediately after the procedure, but these typically subside within a few hours. During the healing process, it is essential to follow the aftercare instructions and products I provide to ensure proper healing and long-lasting results. You may experience some scabbing, darkening of the pigment and subsequent lightening as you begin to heal.

Can I still wear regular makeup after having treatment?

Yes, you can still wear regular makeup over your permanent makeup if desired. However, it is crucial to give the treated area ample time to heal before applying any products to avoid any infections or complications. As always, all is explained in greater detail in your aftercare instructions.

Can cosmetic tattoos be removed?

While permanent makeup is considered long-lasting, it can be corrected or modified. Removing permanent makeup can be a more intricate process and may require multiple laser treatments or saline removal to lighten the pigmentation. Choosing a reputable technician and communicating your desired results clearly can help avoid the need for removal. I will always advise at your consultation if removal is required before beginning a new course of treatment and will refer you to the right technician as needed.

How much does it cost?

The cost of permanent makeup varies depending on the location, technician's experience, and the area being treated. Typically, the procedure can range from £200 to £600 per treatment. It's important to remember that permanent makeup is an investment in your appearance, so it's advisable not to compromise on quality over cost. Ongoing colour boosts and top-ups can also have a broad range depending on location, skill and the area being tattooed.
